First, let me start off this blog post by saying I am at a slight advantage for food photography props. Most of my business is around the beautiful city of Florence, Italy, where Michelin-rated restaurants are next door to historic cafes full of the most mouth-watering delights you can imagine. Finding an appropriate background or prop for me is often easier than my fellow food photographers working in less vibrant settings.
However, a big part of my business is working with brands and setting the stage for smaller restaurants that need to get out the word about their latest kitchen creation. When you cannot raise a freshly made pastry with the Duomo in the background, you can still get incredible shots that elevate a brand and maintain your reputation as an expert in the field.
Here are some essential props to keep handy for the next food photography session you are hired to perform. Keep in mind that a small wooden basket will do the trick to keep most of these items together.

The limit of props you can use to captivate an audience with stunning food photography is only set by your imagination. Check out my Instagram @niccoleone, and you’ll see everything from Roman bowls to fresh mint in a classic cocktail. It comes down to setting the stage for a story the food already wants to tell. Give your creativity the room to have a bit of fun, and you may surprise yourself at the fantastic shots you end up with. Good luck!
